DENVER, Colorado — Gov. Bill Ritter says Colorado could save millions of dollars by reducing the number of felons who commit new crimes and go back to jail.
Ritter told the Colorado Criminal and Juvenile Justice Commission Thursday his proposal could save taxpayers $380 million over five years, including $336 million by eliminating the need to expand a prison in Trinidad.
Ritter says his package will be part of his proposed budget for next year, which will be revealed Sunday.
Ritter proposes 12 programs including prevention services for young offenders, substance-abuse treatment and offender education.
He says the estimated cost next year is $10.6 million.
