‘Snow kicks things off every year’ in Vail
Storm leaves six inches in Vail Valley, more on the way today and this weekend

VAIL, Colorado — Matt “Tooth” Toth, manager of Vail Ski Tech in Vail, Colorado, put his ski boots on Tuesday night just to try them out.
He’s ready for the season to start.
After several days of above average temperatures, a snow storm dumped six inches in parts of the Vail Valley and more is on the way, according to the National Weather Service.
“I think it came just at the right time,” said Toth. “It absolutely gets people amped, I’m super amped.”
Vail Mountain reported receiving four inches of snow from the Tuesday evening storm.
National Weather Service forecaster Mike Chamberlain said a few smaller storms will pass through the mountains during the next week, with the best chance for accumulation is this weekend.
“We’ll get a couple little waves,” Chamberlain said. “The next significant storm will be late in the weekend.”
The storm could drop 3-5 inches of snow, he said.
“Any snow is good news, right?” Chamberlain said.
Toth expects tune-ups to pick up and to see some Front Range residents in the valley looking for ski deals.
“I think with the snow being on the ground and the swap coming up this weekend, people will start thinking more and more about the season,” Toth said.
By Wednesday afternoon, Double Diamond operations manager Jim Cooper had already fit three people for new ski boots.
“Snow is definitely the factor in getting people through the door,” Cooper said. “Snow kicks things off every year.”
Arapahoe Basin and Loveland — the only two mountains open — reported two to three inches of new snow.
Three more Colorado resorts plan to open this weekend. Copper Mountain and Breckenridge each received a couple of inches from the Tuesday storm and will open Friday. The southwestern Colorado mountain Wolf Creek, which got 10 inches of fresh snow, will start its season Saturday.
Temperatures in the Vail Valley during the next week should be remain cold, providing ski resorts the opportunity to make snow, Chamberlain said.
“I saw (Vail) blowing snow,” Cooper said. “It’s good that the mountain got a nice a base, I hope it sticks around until April.”
Independence Pass closed for the season Wednesday.
Christy Sports employee Scott Banjac said walk-in business was quiet Tuesday, but they were fielding lots of phone calls.
“Personally, we’ve been pretty excited about it,” he said. “Everyone in the store is really stoked.”
Vail Mountain is scheduled to open for the season on Nov. 21.
