Breaking News: High-speed chase ends in arrest

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado - A Front Range man who did not pay a hotel bill lead police on a high-speed chase from Edwards over Vail Pass Saturday afternoon, the Eagle County Sheriff's Office says.

The following details are from a press release sent by the Eagle County Sheriff's Office:

A sheriff's deputy attempted to speak to Paul Fenton, 38, of Castle Rock, about not paying a bill at the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera. Around 2 p.m., a sheriff's deputy tried to stop Fenton's car but the man sped away down Squaw Creek Road.

Fenton sped down Highway 6, eventually reaching Interstate 70, where he ran up to 30 cars off the road and reached speeds of 140 mph.

Vail police put tacks on the road, which deflated two of Fenton's tires, but he continued to travel more than 80 mph. After going over Vail Pass, Fenton's vehicle broke down and he jumped out of his still-moving car and was arrested around 2:30 p.m.

During the pursuit Fenton called 911 and a Denver TV station. He told the 911 operator that he was going to blow his brains out if police didn't stop chasing him.

The Colorado State Patrol, Vail Police Department, Avon Police Department, Summit County Sheriff's Office, and the Silverthorne Police Department assisted the sheriff's office.

Fenton was arrested and charged with felony theft, felony fraud, vehicular eluding, and reckless driving. He may also be charged vehicular assault for running other vehicles off the road during the pursuit.

In addition to the charges from today's incident Fenton was wanted on five outstanding warrants for parole violation, flight escape, and larceny.

Fenton was transported to the St Anthony Summit Medical Center.
