Llama rescued after falling into icy Colorado pond dies

Veterinarians planned to use blow dryers to dry and warm the llama

SALIDA, Colorado — A llama that plunged through ice on a small pond near Salida, Colorado has died, despite efforts to rescue and warm the animal.

Emergency crews were called to rescue the llama at the pond on private property near Centerville, north of Salida, on Friday morning.

A neighbor saw the llama fall through the ice. Chaffee County authorities say the animal was submerged with only its neck and head poking up above water.

Veterinarians planned to use blow dryers to dry and warm the llama and attempted to get it to walk, but the animal died from hypothermia.

It's not clear how long the llama was in the icy water before being pulled from the pond.
