BOULDER, Colorado — Ferocious winds are fueling two fires in Boulder County, Colorado, causing the mandatory evacuation of thousands of people, along with horses and llamas.

Reverse 9-1-1 calls recommending evacuation were made to 10,800 homes, Boulder Police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said.

One hundred acres of mostly grassland are burning, 75 firefighters are working the fires that are blowing from the west. Thirty pieces of fire equipment are on the scene.

Under mandatory evacuation are residents of the Crestview, Autumn Ranch and North Rim neighborhoods, as well as Olde Stage Road east to US 36; and the neighborhoods from 63rd Avenue south to Highway 119 ands west to US 36.

Horses were evacuated from a fire that began in the 7200 block of Olde Stage Road, northwest of Boulder, and spread quickly to a ranch to the northeast, reports the Boulder Daily Camera.

Police scanner traffic indicated the fire reached the door of the house on the property, but a person at the ranch refused to leave.

Sheriff's deputies removed the person.

Scanner traffic indicated that firefighters may be faced with a new challenge -- the fire getting close to a warehouse that hazardous materials inside.

A downed power line sparked a tree fire near 739 Grant Place close to Niwot Road in the early afternoon, the Daily Camera reported.

Frantic horse owners were trying to cross Niwot Road with their animals.

The residents of the Lake Valley Estates and Auburn Hills subdivisions were told to evacuate, and began heading to Niwot High School.

Firefighters contained the blaze that burned a hose to the ground on 45th Street.

The staging area for the fires is the YMCA at 29th Street and Mapleton Avenue in Boulder.
