EAGLE, Colorado — Somewhere west of Eagle, Colorado there’s a cow elk wandering around with a bar stool stuck on its head.
The animal with its unusual head gear was first seen on the conservation easement property on Brush Creek last week, south of the Eagle Ice Rink.
Bill Johnson spotted the animal from his home. It took some scrutiny through the binoculars to determine that the animal had what appeared to be a metal kitchen bar stool stuck on her head. The legs were pointing up, and the elk’s head was pushed through the metal ring that holds the legs together.
Johnson observed that the tool didn’t seem to prevent the elk from grazing or moving around.
The elk was next spotted west of town, near the gas plant.
“Apparently she is fully mobile,” said Colorado Division of Wildlife officer Craig Wescoatt, who has been receiving reports about the animal for several days.
Wescoatt said that efforts to get near the animal have not been successful. When approached, the elk skitters away.
“She’s very active. The bar stool doesn’t seem to be impairing her to any great degree,” he observed, “She just looks kind of goofy.”
Wescoatt said he has not had any reported sightings of the animal in recent days, although several callers have suggested that perhaps the elk picked up the stool during a visit to the Brush Creek Saloon or the Dusty Boot Saloon.
