AVON On Tuesday evening, author Dr. Peter Decker will share a slide presentation on the policies and incidents that led to the forced exit migration of the Ute Indians from Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. The presentation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Avon Public Library. Dr. Deckers lecture will cover events which occurred during the 19th century, including the migration of settlers into native territory, and the Meeker Massacre.
This years speaker series has taken us from the migration routes of the ancient Anasazi, along the Ute trail, and will conclude with Dr. Deckers presentation on the involuntary migration of the Utes from our region, said Michelle Marx, adult services librarian at the Avon Public Library. Were looking forward to hearing his contributions to this ongoing conversation.
Holding a Ph.D. from Columbia University, Dr. Decker taught American history at Barnard College and Columbia University, and public policy and history at Duke University. He has served on the Colorado Commission of Higher Education, and as Commissioner of Agriculture. Major publications by Dr. Decker include books Old Fences, New Neighbors; Fortunes and Failures and The Utes Must Go!: American Expansion and the Removal of a People. Dr. Deckers presentation is the final installment in the 7th annual High Country Speaker Series, People, Paths, Perspectives: Exploring Native Migrations, presented free to the public by the Eagle Valley Library District and Gore Range Natural Science School.
Books will be available for purchase and author signing, courtesy of The Bookworm of Edwards. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Avon Public Library at 970-949-6797.
