Hundreds seek work at new Colorado wind power plant

PUEBLO, Colorado " A new wind turbine plant coming to Pueblo has drawn overwhelming interest among jobseekers, a surge attributed to the poor economy and layoffs in Colorado's gas and oil industry.

Denmark-based Vestas Wind Systems held a job fair Saturday for some 400 manufacturing jobs coming to what the company says will be the world's biggest turbine-tower factory. Hundreds of interested workers were turned away after about 1,000 people showed up.

The company asked some folks to come to later information sessions. Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter was among those in Pueblo Saturday, and he told The Pueblo Chieftain he wasn't surprised at the turnout. Unemployment in Colorado is higher than it's been in two decades.

Colorado and the city of Pueblo have offered Vestas about $2 million in tax incentives to build the plant.
