VAIL VALLEY, Clorado — The Vail Valley's Roundup River Ranch, a provisional member of Paul Newman’s Association of Hole in the Wall Camps, is a free summer camp for children with life-threatening diseases that is scheduled to open in Eagle County in 2011.
Until the camp opens, it has been sending children to other Hole In the Wall camps through its “On the Road” program. Eight of those campers suffer from hemophilia. Another group of children with hemophilia will participate this summer.
On Friday, World Hemophilia Day will be recognized in more than 100 countries. The theme for 2009 is “Together, we care,” which emphasizes the importance of comprehensive care of the disease.
Hemophilia is a group of hereditary genetic disorders that impair the body's ability to control blood clotting or coagulation, which is used to stop bleeding when a blood vessel is broken. According to World Federation of Hemophilia, only 30 percent of people with hemophilia have been identified.
With treatment, people with hemophilia can expect to live a long, healthy life. But without treatment they face continual pain, disability, isolation and premature death.
Children with hemophilia are usually unable to participate in any kind of activity or sport where there may be physical contact.
“For all types of hemophilia, getting the appropriate treatment quickly for bleeding to limit damage and complications is of the highest importance,” said Lia Gore, M.D., chair of Roundup River Ranch’s medical advisory committee. “Roundup River Ranch offers these children a safe place to be children, and experience an important part of childhood with the availability of immediate treatment from expert staff."
Roundup River Ranch will be built on 85 acres of land along the Colorado River just north of Dotsero. Construction is expected to break ground later this year. For more information on the camp visit www.RoundupRiverRanch.org or call 970-926-2448.
