EAGLE, Colorado — Jim Steinberg has zigzagged Colorado dozens of times, and he’s got the photos to prove it.

Steinberg, an accomplished photographer based in Steamboat Springs, has selected more than 450 of his favorite photos for his tome “Colorado’s Scenic Byways,” a visual tribute to the Centennial State.

He will showcase and discuss his work Thursday evening, April 16, at the Eagle Public Library as part of the Bookworm’s Live at the Library partnership with the Eagle County and Vail public libraries.

Steinberg visited all 25 of Colorado’s byways throughout the changing seasons, careful to shoot each location and landscape at different times, both of the day and of the year.

“Hopefully, as you look through it you see that on each byway, they’re not all done at the same time,” Steinberg said in an interview with The Vail Daily upon the book’s release last fall. “There are different seasons, they’re going different directions, there’s different times of day. I wanted to really not only get ... variety, but I wanted to go back over and over until I really felt I had captured the essence of each byway, because each one’s different.”

Using an old-fashioned 35-millimeter camera with film, Steinberg often slept in the trunk of his 1980 Volvo while traversing Colorado.

Steinberg then divided the book into five sections — plains, foothills, high peaks, mountain parks, and plateau country — before adding commentary on each region from Salida-based writer and ecologist Susan Tweit. Steinberg also included a road atlas tracing his various routes.

“Colorado’s Scenic Byways” was so well received upon its release that Gov. Bill Ritter made it his gift to visiting governors and politicians at the Democratic National Convention.
