GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — District Attorney Martin Beeson is considering running for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District seat in 2010, the secretary of the Garfield County Republican Party said this week.
Democrat John Salazar currently holds the office. He easily won re-election in November 2008 over Republican challenger Wayne Wolf.
Beeson, a Republican, directed some words at Salazar from atop a picnic table at a tax day tea party in front of the Garfield County Courthouse in Glenwood Springs Wednesday. He was speaking to a crowd protesting increased government spending and criticizing the new presidential administration and top Democrats.
“Mr. Salazar, keep your hands out of my pocket,” Beeson said, directing the same message to President Barack Obama, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nanci Pelosi.
Beeson could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday, but said in a phone message that he expects to make an announcement in the near future.
As to Beeson’s speech being the centerpiece of the tax day tea party, county Republican Party secretary Marilyn Oden said Beeson is considering running for the congressional seat. The 3rd District covers most of the Western Slope, as well as the Pueblo area.
Beeson became district attorney of the 9th Judicial District in January 2006 after leading the recall effort against former DA Colleen Truden. He was unopposed while being re-elected as DA last fall. The judicial district covers Pitkin, Garfield and Rio Blanco counties.
Beeson told the Aspen Times in July last year that he was running for re-election because it’s “the right thing to do” after “starting off on this quest to fight for truth and justice.”
