VAIL VALLEY, Colorado — To celebrate the conclusion of national poetry month in Colorado's Vail Valley, students from Minturn Middle School will share their original creative works at The Bookworm of Edwards tonight at 5 p.m.
About 20 students and some teachers are expected to read pieces of poetry and spoken word that they have been writing and editing in class throughout the month.
“Our students have been reading multicultural poetry and learning how to identify universal themes such as rhyme and rhythm,” said 7th grade writing and social studies teacher Audrey Valiton.
The class spent the past five weeks studying notable poets such as award-winning poet Maya Angelou, Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes, multiple Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Frost, children’s pet Jack Prelutsky and Hispanic poet Sandra Cisneros, Valiton said.
Students have also studied the lyrics of musicians including Ben Harper and Michael Franti, searching for poetic themes through the familiar context of rock and reggae-infused music, Valiton said.
“It’s inspiring to watch the kids connect and understand each other more through poetry,” Valiton said. “Hopefully this is the beginning of something that can bring people together, not just Minturn Middle School, but celebrating people from throughout the community.”
