VAIL VALLEY, Colorado — Berry Creek Middle School’s eighth-grade dual language students are almost finished with a Vail Valley narrative project that will help orphans in Peru.
Mary Liebl's class at the Edwards school was identifying compound and complex sentences using Eleanor Roosevelt quotes last November when discussions began about how the quotes relate to life today.
“Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give,” read one quote.
Shortly after the discussion, Liebl met Joel and Robyn Hanson, a couple who spent a year volunteering at the Hogar de Esperanza Orphanage in Peru. They decided to adopt five orphans after their year was up — their life is a vivid illustration of giving joy to others.
Robyn Hanson willingly agreed to present to the class. She spoke in both Spanish and English, sharing details about the children and the orphanage in Peru.
The students were moved to do something to enrich the lives of these children. They came up with the idea of writing bilingual story books after hearing about the Peruvian childrens’ love for books — their hope is to teach the children English and also entertain them.
