Simulated rescue turns real for Aurora firefighters

Two Aurora firefighters fell in a canyon in Douglas County.

AURORA, Colorado — A training exercise turned into a real rescue for Aurora firefighters when two members of the team fell in a canyon in Douglas County.

One firefighter had minor injuries and was treated at a hospital and released after the accident around noon Tuesday.

The other had a broken leg and was flown from Castlewood Canyon to a Denver-area hospital. He was scheduled to have surgery Tuesday night.

Battalion Chief Mark Turley says the team was simulating a rescue in the canyon when the firefighters fell. Both had ropes on.

The two are members of the Aurora Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
