Vail Resorts gets OK for Avon townhouses

Vail Resorts Development Company is an important step closer to building Red House project

AVON, Colorado — Vail Resorts Development Company is an important step closer to building a 15-unit townhouse project, known as the Red House project, in the town of Avon.

The Avon Town Council went back and forth with the company's representatives for months about the development planned for the corner of Avon Road and Highway 6, just across from the entrance to Beaver Creek Resort. The subject had been continued throughout several meetings before Tuesday's approval.

The development will be the Vail Resorts Development Company's first residential project within the town.

Council members worked out the kinks in the project they had argued over for months, from how much deed-restricted housing the company would have to provide to river setbacks and environmentally sound building and designs.

Councilman David Dantas voted no on the project, citing problems he had with allowing the development to encroach on the town's required river setbacks. Other members said the encroachment was a tradeoff for the number of other positive benefits the project would bring, such as river access for kayakers and cash to the town to use for affordable housing.
