Avon's annual Salute to the USA set for July 3

Foghat set to play Avon's annual Fourth of July celebration

AVON —The 24th anniversary of Salute to the USA will be held in Avon's Harry A. Nottingham Park on July 4. The annual Independence Day celebration will begin at 5 p.m. with live music, food vendors and a beer garden.

A large free family zone will offer families carnival games, inflatable jumping toys, face painting, clowns and a special children's instrument petting zoo presented by Bravo! The family zone is sponsored by Calvary Chapel and will open at 5:30 p.m. and continue until the fireworks light the sky at 9:45 p.m.

Avon-based band Bluezilla will kick off the live music at 6 p.m. followed by KZYR live radio until 8 p.m. The headling band is ‘70s and ‘80s band Foghat. A group of unpretentious young Brits with an affection for American blues and ‘50s rock ‘n' roll started the band in 1971.

By the mid-'70s, they had evolved into a major touring and recording act, playing a pumped-up brand of boogie-rock to arena-size audiences. Their looks grew flashier, their sound fattened and filled out, yet the roots-rock core of the band remained ever-present under the surface.

They are known for classics like “Slow Ride,” “Foul for the City” and “I Just Want to Make Love to You.” The evening concludes with the Colorado Rockies largest fireworks display. The spectacular display will kick off at 9:45 p.m. and will be choreographed to a musical score simulcast on local radio.

Attendees are asked to leave dogs, alcohol, grills and personal fireworks at home. Blankets and warm evening attire are recommended. For more information, call 970-748-4032 or log onto www.avonrec.org.
