The volunteers of Friends of the Eagles Nest Wilderness has received a grant in the amount of $10,000 from the National Forest Foundation Ski Area Program to again attack noxious weeds in the Eagles Nest Wilderness and adjacent areas of the White River National Forest.
These monies will be used this year to hire Weed Busters from Delta with their mules and equipment to treat weeds in remote, roadless areas in both Eagle & Summit Counties.
Friends of the Eagles Nest Wilderness would like to especially recognize Vail Resorts and Copper Mountain ski companies, as well as the Forest Service, for their continued support of this program.
The 2008 spot spray activity was concentrated in the Lower and Upper Piney area as well as adjacent Meadow Creek.
Volunteers extended this effort on the lower East Vail trails where fields of yellow toadflax, oxeye daisy, Canada and musk thistle were targeted. The unchecked spread of these non-native, invasive species can eliminate native vegetation and remove important food sources for wildlife.
