Rockies bullish on new bullpen

Revamped relief corps is a big reason for Colorado's climb into contention

DENVER, Colorado — Clint Hurdle would not have fallen on his sword had the 'pen been this mighty under his watch.

The most obvious difference with the Rockies is the new leadership. The biggest difference entering tonight's series with Arizona? The relief corps.

Simply put, the bullpen has gone from ugly to nasty. During the first two months, the relievers' ERA was 5.25, compared with 3.86 in June. That dramatic improvement has shoved the Rockies back into the playoff picture, and their performance could ultimately determine whether the team reaches the postseason.

Evenly matched teams lead to close games that ultimately land in the hands of relievers.
