SUMMIT COUNTY, Colorado — Two men in a helicopter that crashed southwest of Quandary Mountain on Thursday are recovering from injuries sustained while trying to deliver supplies to a mine.
The pilot, Danny Kin Brown, was taken to St. Anthony Central hospital in Denver, where he remained in stable condition Saturday, said Cindy Rigot, hospital public information officer.
Federal entities are investigating what caused the Bell 260 helicopter with Aviation Technology Services — an Englewood company — to crash in the remote area about 100 yards from an un-named reservoir.
Anna DeBattiste, public information officer with Summit County Rescue, said in an e-mail that the helicopter's male passenger owns the mining claim and is building a cabin on the site.
He's a client of ATS, which also services scenic tours, weddings and aerial pipeline leak detection.
The man was pinned beneath the wreckage after the crash, DeBattiste said, and was extricated by the rescue group on the ground and by boat — to get across Upper Blue Lakes.
The area of the crash was inaccessible to motor vehicles, including ATVs.
The crash occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday but wasn't reported until about 2:45 p.m. After communication with the first ATS helicopter was lost, a second went to investigate.
Red, White and Blue Fire District chief Gary Green said the district was first to respond to the crash call, establishing incident command near Upper Blue Dam — about 2.5 miles from the crash site.
