VAIL, Colorado — Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear finally cashed in at the Vail Lacrosse Shootout.
After seemingly being a constant presense come the Final Four the last few years, the Merrill Lynch finally got the brass ring Sunday by defeating Team 21, aka Cornell, 11-8 for the men's elite title Sunday.
The Ivy League however went 1-for-2 in title games Sunday as Gang Green, from Dartmouth, squeaked by CRSLax.com in overtime, 12-11.
Men's Elite
In a battle of top seeds Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear took down defending champion Team 21 to earn their first Vail Lacrosse Shootout on Sunday afternoon. Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear gained the lead on a two-point goal from All-Tournament midfielder Jake Plonket (Syracuse) late in the first quarter and never looked back.
The staunch defensive effort of Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear held the balanced Big Red offense at bay. All-Tournament long poles Tim Shaw (Virginia), Billy Haire (Bucknell), and Tom Izard (Bucknell) hounded the Team 21 offense all game. All three were essential in keeping 21 off the board for 16 minutes during the second and third quarters.
Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear used their size and speed to dominate the possession game, scooping up 43 ground balls and winning 18 faceoffs on the afternoon. Team 21 got only 19 ground balls and four draws. me.
Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear's All-Tournament attackman Tim Desko (Syracuse) finished with four goals and totaled nine goals and three assists for the tournament. Tournament Offensive Most Valuable Player Steve Giannone (Virginia) tallied two goals and one assist. He totaled thirteen goals and three assists en route to carrying his team to the championship.
Tournament Defensive Most Valuable Player, Chris Madalon (North Carolina), finished with six saves in his half of play. Madalon made several great stops throughout the tournament, and was the second-half anchor for the champions.
Matt Madalon (Roanoke) also made six stops in the championship game during his half of play. For Team, 21 A.J. Fiore (Cornell) finished with fourteen saves.
Rocco Romero (Cornell) was also an All-Tournament selection and finished with one goal and two assists on the day for Team 21. Bobby Magrin (Herkimer) had a hat trick and that included a laser of a shot that hit the top corner.

Befitting the first overtime championship game in years in the division, Gang Green and CRSLax.com went bqack-and-forth.
With several ties in the course of the game, CRSLax.com scored the last goal in regulation to tie the game. In overtime, CRSLax.com took the first shot on goal but Gang Green's goalie, Julie Wadland, made the save.
Gang Green, not to be out done, took the ball and went down field. Colorado's own Annie Liebovitz had possession at the top of the fan, made a few moves and placed the ball in the top corner for the winning goal.
