Moth-like insect may warrant federal protection in Colorado

Susan's Purse-making Caddisfly could be listed as a threatened or endangered

DENVER, Colorado — Federal officials say a moth-like insect found in only two areas of Colorado may warrant protection under the Endangered Species Act.

The Fish and Wildlife Service said Wednesday that further study is needed to determine whether the Susan's Purse-making Caddisfly should be listed as a threatened or endangered species.

Environmental groups have filed a petition seeking protection for the insect, claiming logging, grazing and other human activity threaten its existence. It is found only in Trout Creek Spring in Chaffee (CHAY'-fee) County and in High Creek Fen in Park County.

The Fish and Wildlife Service will accept comments on the insect until Sept. 7.
