VAIL, Colorado — Vail Fire Department Deputy Chief Mike McGee recently sent word that U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has asked people to stop using Kidde Model PI2000 Dual Sensor Smoke Alarms.
About 94,000 of the smoke alarms were sold between Aug. 1 of 2008 and May 4 of this year. The problem is that an electrostatic charge can damage the unit, and it won't detect fires.
Kidde has received two reports of smoke alarm malfunctions, but no injuries have been reported.
The recall involves Kidde dual sensor smoke alarms model PI2000. People can contact Kidde to receive a free replacement smoke alarm. For more information, call Kidde, 1-877-524-2086 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. eastern time Monday through Friday, or go to www.kidde.com.
