VAIL, Colorado — Classical music takes a festive twist Sunday in Vail, Colorado.
The Philadelphia Orchestra performs an evening of festive classics Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater as part of the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival. The concert will be highlighted by some of the most colorful and exciting compositions by Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev and Sibelius.
The concert begins with Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol, a colorful, virtuosic, and Spanish-inspired introduction to the evening's program. Listeners will hear a Russian flavor in Prokofiev's Concerto No. 3 in C Major, which features some of the composer's boldest innovations for piano.
Twenty-two-year-old Pianist Yuja Wang, who last performed with the Festival in 2006, joins the orchestra for Prokofiev's Concerto No. 3.
“We are thrilled to have Yuja back at the Festival,” said Eugenia Zukerman, artistic director for Bravo. “She has become a master of the piano since she last performed here.”
The Philadelphia Orchestra concludes the evening with Sibelius' lavish Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, a descriptive work that shows Slavic influence and reflects Sibelius' Finnish nationalism.
Associate Conductor and Artistic Director Rossen Milanov leads The Philadelphia Orchestra in this performance. In addition, he serves as music director of both New Jersey's Symphony in C (formerly the Haddonfield Symphony) and the New Symphony Orchestra in his native city of Sofia, Bulgaria, and chief conductor of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony. Mr. Milanov has conducted orchestras all over the world, including the Rotterdam and Seoul Philharmonics; the Baltimore, Colorado, Honolulu, and Lucerne Symphonies; the Residentie Orchestra of the Hague in the Netherlands; and the Teatro Colón Buenos Aires. He has received the Award for Extraordinary Contribution to Bulgarian Culture, and he was chosen as Bulgaria's Musician of the Year in 2005.
Tickets are $85 for premium reserved, $63 for regular reserved, and $23 for lawn seating. Children 12 and under are free for lawn seating.
