Empty Bowl helps fill Vail Valley Salvation Army food pantry

Event takes place Aug. 21

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado — The Salvation Army Food Pantry continues to operate at record levels. Donations of food remain high, but the organization is still purchasing up to $400 worth of food each week to meet the needs of the hungry in Eagle County. To help the Army meet this need, a group of local women have organized the Empty Bowl fundraising event.

The Empty Bowl concept has come to the Vail Valley from Taos, N.M. Its purpose is to help our friends and neighbors by keeping the Vail Salvation Army Food Pantry filled. This event utilizes bowls produced and donated by local potters as a fund-raising vehicle. The empty bowl symbolizes the plight of those who are hungry in our valley. This lunch “a la soup kitchen,” event takes place on Aug. 21 from 12-2 p.m. at Eagle-Vail Pavilion

Potters and others have donated bowls while local restaurants donate different soups, breads and desserts. Potters donating their art to the project include Ann Loper, Margie Westerman, Kate Wasson, Taylor Talmage, Pauli Bradley Frantz, the Denver Guild of Potters and Lake County Potters.

Donors of delicious soups, breads and desserts include Larkspur, Spago, Ti Amo, Golden Eagle Inn, Beano's Cabin, Woody's, Columbine Bakery, Avon Bakery and the Westside Café. Donors of various support services include Vail Resorts, Slifer Smith and Frampton, Vail Daily, Old Gypsum Printer, Snappy Print/Colorado Springs and the Eagle-Vail Recreation District.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 from any of the many volunteers involved. Those who attend will receive their bowls to take home as a reminder of hunger in our valley, the soup, bread and desserts. The soup will warm your body, while the feeling of helping your friends and neighbors will warm your soul.

Only a limited number of tickets will be available at the door, so please purchase your ticket in advance. If you don't know one of the volunteers, tickets can be purchased by contacting Diana Mathias at 970-471-6000 or at dmathians@slifer.net.
