VAIL, Colorado — Designs for a fire station in West Vail, Colorado will be a topic of discussion Tuesday night in Vail.
Drawings of the 16,700-square-foot building will come before Vail town council during a work session, Fire Chief Mark Miller said.
Estimates suggest the fire station would cost roughly $5.6 million, but officials hope to whittle that down, Miller said.
The fire station would stand along North Frontage Road next to the Shell station. The town bought the land for $2 million in 2007. A Wendy's restaurant once stood on the property.
Designs call for three double garage bays, 12 dorms for resident firefighters, a backup emergency operations center and a room for training and community meetings. Representatives from Belford-Watkins Group in Fort Collins will present the designs.
It would be the third fire station covering Vail Pass through West Vail. The other stations are located in Vail and East Vail. With a West Vail station, Miller said firefighters could respond quicker to fires and handle the town's rising call volume.
Vail town council has yet to approve the fire station. Councilman Kevin Foley said he expects the board to vote on it this coming fall. Miller said he applied for federal stimulus money for the project.
If approved, construction on the fire station could begin in early spring of 2010 and wrap up toward the end of that year, Miller said.
