Governor candidate visits Vail Valley

VAIL VALLEY, Colorado - Republican Scott McInnis stopped by Main St. Grill in Edwards in Colorado's Vail Valley on Monday during the launch of his statewide campaign for governor.About 40 people gathered for the meet-and-greet event with the former congressman from Glenwood Springs.McInnis fielded questions on topics ranging from stopping illegal immigration to creating jobs. McInnis said he's a firm proponent of the natural gas industry and supports the expansion of the Fort Carson military facility. After the event, the candidate gave tours of his solar-paneled sheep camp, which was parked outside Rick & Kelly's American Bistro. The 20-foot sheep camp - a trailer where ranchers sleep while they care for livestock on pastures - symbolizes McInnis' opposition to the state's late-vehicle registration fee, he said. McInnis said he was slapped with a $100 fee for the trailer, which he said had expired plates because it was being built on blocks."The people out there feel like they got nickel and dimed on this licensing stuff," McInnis said. The sheep camp gets use on McInnis' wife's family ranch near Meeker, a spokesman said.McInnis says that Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter has increased spending while at the same time raising fees and taxes. McInnis says he believes Ritter is vulnerable because voters are frustrated.McInnis on Monday launched a 28-stop tour focusing on jobs and the economy.Dick Blair, a self-described conservative from Edwards, said he came to Main St. Grill to hear what McInnis had to say."I will support and vote for Scott because I think he's serious about balancing the budget," he said.Other announced candidates for the Republican primary next year include Evergreen businessman Dan Maes and state Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry. The Associated Press contributed to this storyHigh Life Writer Sarah Mausolf can be reached at 970-748-2928 or smausolf@vaildaily.com.
