VAIL VALLEY, Colorado — Berry Creek Middle School students want to help less fortunate people in Colorado's Vail Valley who struggle with the change in weather, as they are living without food and shelter.
In conjunction with the town of Vail, Berry Creek Middle School Teach-1-to-Lead-1 students will be holding a canned food drive through Thursday for the annual “Make a Difference Day Food Drive.”
The ninth annual event, put on by Eagle County, encourages community members to drop off non-perishable food items to Berry Creek Middle School in Edwards, where designated boxes will be made available. Acceptable items include canned, boxed and bagged goods. No glass, please.
All of the food collected stays in Eagle County and benefits the Salvation Army, the Bright Future Foundation and Food Rescue Express.
Community members also have the option of donating money in order to purchase food instead of dropping off physical items. When determining the amount to donate, please note that $1 equals 5 pounds of food and donations are 100 percent tax deductible. Please make checks payable to “The Town of Vail Food Drive” and mail to: Town of Vail, 75 S. Frontage Road, Vail, CO 81657.
While Eagle County donated a whopping 330,000 pounds of food last year, the goal is to collect 450,000 pounds this year.
The Teach-1-to-Lead-1 program works to create momentum in young people by encouraging them to live lives grounded in integrity, healthy habits, strong relationships and positive influence.
“Teach-1-to-Lead-1 provides students with an opportunity to learn the tools they need to be positive leaders in the community,” states Nita Kirwan, Berry Creek Middle School Guidance Counselor and Registrar. “Activities like the 'Make a Difference Day Food Drive' align perfectly with the program's goal of developing leaders of integrity.”
