On behalf of Holy Cross Energy, an electric distribution cooperative serving approximately 55,000 meters in Eagle, Garfield, Pitkin and portions of Gunnison and Mesa counties, we herein offer our support for Eagle County Ballot Initiative 1A.
Creation of the Energy Smart Local Improvement District and associated funding mechanisms provides a new avenue for Eagle County residents to incorporate energy efficiency and renewable energy generation improvements in homes or businesses. Once implemented, such improvements should yield a direct benefit to property owners in terms of savings on their utility bills. A significant indirect benefit will involve the creation and sustainability of local and regional jobs.
Over the past four years, Holy Cross Energy has distributed, to its member-consumers, more than $2.3 million in rebates and incentives for energy efficiency and renewables. This ballot initiative provides an expanded opportunity for larger scale improvements such as insulations, replacing inefficient heating systems, upgrading doors/windows, installing solar electric or solar hot water, and more to be done via a financing structure extending out 15 to 20 years, thus making contemplated improvements more attractive and feasible.
