Routt County conserves ranch land

Routt County is spending $250,000 to conserve more than 600 acres of ranch land

HAYDEN, Colo. — Routt County is spending $250,000 to conserve more than 600 acres of ranch land north of Hayden.

Commissioners approved the expenditure Tuesday to preserve meadows, riparian areas and rangeland on the Howe Ranch in the Elkhead Valley.

The Colorado Cattlemen's Agricultural Land Trust will hold the conservation easement. Chris West, the trust's director, says protecting ranches like the Howe Ranch will ensure that Routt County's ranching heritage will be preserved for future generations.

The Elkhead Valley was settled in the late 1800s. The claim on what is now the Howe Ranch was staked in the early 1900s.
