Schleper in Europe
U.S. Ski Team member Sarah Schleper, a Vail native, is currently training with the women's technical team in Germany. She will be competing next in the slalom race in Levi, Finland. She will return to Colorado later this month for the race in Aspen.
VAIL, Colorado — World Cup champ and U.S. Ski Team member Lindsey Vonn will be training on Vail Mountain's Golden Peak starting Tuesday.
The Vail resident will train alongside Ski and Snowboard Club Vail athletes on terrain that's ready thanks to new upgrades to Golden Peak's snowmaking system.
Vonn, the reigning World Cup overall champion, is coming off a ninth-place finish in the giant slalom Oct. 24 in the World Cup opener in Soelden, Austria.
“The course is in great shape,” said Aldo Radamus, executive director of the Ski and Snowboard Club Vail. “Vail Resorts' snowmaking and cat crew did a phenomenal job getting everything pushed off and groomed.”
On Monday night, Radamus and race crew workers were preparing to inject water into the course to make it icy for Vonn, Radamus said.
Vonn will be running a slalom course on Golden Peak from 7 to 10 a.m. today. She is expected to train on Golden Peak on Wednesday and Thursday as well.
This week's training will serve as a final tune-up for Vonn heading into the next World Cup race, in Levi, Finland, the weekend after next. After that, she'll head to Aspen for the Winternational on Nov. 28 and 29.
Vonn will be training this week alongside Ski and Snowboard Club Vail's youth athletes. The newly upgraded snowmaking system, which was funded by the ski club, allows training to begin about six or seven weeks earlier than did before. Vonn, a Minnesota native, spent years training with Ski and Snowboard Club Vail as a young skier.
“It's great to have Lindsey here,” Radamus said.
In August, Vail Resorts announced a four-year sponsorship deal with Vonn, who is aiming to win five gold medals at this winter's Vancouver Olympics. As part of the deal, Vonn is living in the Arrabelle at Vail Square in Lionshead.
The training on Golden Peak is also part of Vonn's deal with Vail, said Doug Haney of the U.S. Ski Team.
Vonn appeared as a guest on the “Tonight” Show with Conan O'Brien last Wednesday.
Vail Mountain opens for the public Nov. 20.
