Eagle County treasurer to hold tax lien sale

Sale takes place Wednesday at Eagle County Building

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado — The Eagle County Treasurer's Office will hold its annual tax lien sale this Wednesday at the county building, located at 500 Broadway in Eagle. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. in the Treasurer's Office, with the sale to begin promptly at 9 a.m. in the Eagle County Room.

The interest rate for 2008 property taxes being sold is 10 percent. All participants must complete a registration form and a W-9 form to participate in the tax lien sale. Both forms are available online at www.eaglecounty.us/treasurer/taxSale.cfm, or plan to arrive early to complete the forms at registration.

Eagle County Treasurer Karen Sheaffer says investors participate in the sale because interest rates are generally higher than those associated with savings accounts or Certificates of Deposit (CDs).

“Investors who participate are purchasing the taxes due on property, it does not give them ownership or legal rights to the property in any way,” said Sheaffer. “Less than one percent of all tax liens actually end up going to deed.”

Property taxes under $7,500 will be handled in a “Round Robin” format, followed by property taxes $7,500 and over which will be open for bidding, then mobile home taxes at the end. Investors will be responsible for monitoring their purchases; payment for all purchases will be due at the end of the sale. Cash, personal checks, cashier's checks and certified checks will be accepted.
