AVON — Police on Monday chased a man who reportedly ran away after being stopped for speeding, an Avon police report said.
Police stopped a van on West Beaver Creek Boulevard in Avon after clocking his speed on I-70 westbound as 96 mph in a 65 mph zone, the report said.
Once stopped, the driver, a 28-year-old Front Range man, followed the cops' request to get out of the car and walk to the rear bumper, the report said.
Then he allegedly turned and ran, sprinting full force toward the Sheraton, the report said.
One of the officers hit Sherwood with a Tazer, but Sherwood's thick coat rendered the hit ineffective, the report said.
Police chased the man on foot and, after hearing he was hiding in a closet inside the Sheraton, apprehended him inside the building, the report said.
Lt. Greg Daly said suspects rarely flee from Avon Police. When they do, it raises a red flag.
“If he is despreate enough to run, our concern is: He's going to take somebody hostage or hurt people to try to make his escape,” Daly said.
Police took the man the Eagle County jail. He faces charges of second degree burglary, criminal mischief, obstructing a peace officer, resisting arrest and speeding. Also, Daly said there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Longmont for domestic violence.
