Avon: Bomb threat prompts Wal-Mart evacuation

Avon police apprehended a suspect Tuesday night

AVON — Police responded to a bomb threat at Wal-Mart in Avon just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday night, Avon Police Sgt. Bernie McGovern said.

Shoppers were evacuated from the department store for about half an hour.

Around 4:45 p.m., Avon police responded to a reported bomb threat at the Academy Bank inside Wal-Mart, McGovern said.

“There was no bomb,” he said.

However, a suspect had given the bank teller a note containing a bomb threat and robbery attempt, Avon Police Lt. Greg Daly said. He could not elaborate on what the note said.

Police apprehended a suspect around 6:45 p.m, Daly said. The suspect, 23-year-old Asa Robinson, does not have a fixed address, Daly said.

Avon and Minturn police responded to the scene, McGovern said. Police also contacted the F.B.I. about the incident, he said.

Edwards resident Jimmy Maners, 23, said he had been shopping for groceries when the commotion broke out.

“I was walking in the aisles and a fellow, an employee, came up to me and said, ‘You need to evacuate the building,” he said. “I said, ‘What should I do with my cart?' He said, ‘Just leave it.'”

Maners said he waited in his car until shoppers were allowed back inside the store. He said he saw about 30 abandoned shopping carts packed with products.

Shopper Ximena Gerlero, 47, said she was grabbing some oranges when she saw people running.

“I just saw people running,” the Avon resident said. “I heard people scream ‘Let's go!' I just left the cart and I ran outside. With everything happening now, you don't know if there is a shooter. It is getting crazy, this town.”

The reported bomb threat comes three days after one person died and three were injured in a shooting at the Sandbar Sports Grill in West Vail.
