Gypsum organizes holiday gift drive for troops

Most requested items are non-perishable food, phone cards, toiletries, batteries

GYPSUM, Colorado — In an effort to support troops away from home for the holidays, the town of Gypsum will host its second annual Project Care Package.

“It is really important to remember the troops and take care of them,” said Dawn Ritts, Gypsum events manager. “Whether we want them to be over there or not they are there and we should support them. Last year Gypsum chalked up a big success during its first care package collection.

“We collected over 400 pounds of donations,” said Ritts. “It was awesome.”

Both individuals and businesses donated to Project Care Package last year. Local businesses JB's Ts and D Jensen Electric both made significant donations.

Ritts said D Jensen Electric donated $200 to $300 worth of treats, snacks and toiletries. JB's Ts donated about 100 olive green undershirts.

“I felt like it was a really nice cause around the holidays,” said owner of JB's Ts, Susan Byron. “We thought it would be a nice thing to do.”

Letters from local kids were also included in the packages.

Once the items are collected and the packages are assembled, the town of Gypsum ships them to an organization called Marine Parents, which ships the packages to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Donations of care package items can be dropped off at the Gypsum Town Hall, the Gypsum Recreation Center and library from Nov. 1 through Nov. 20. The most requested and appreciated care package items include: Pre-paid AT&T Global Military Calling Cards, single-serving size snacks and non-perishable food items (tuna packets, beef jerky, small containers of canned fruit, dried fruit and nuts, etc.), pre-sweetened flavored beverage mixes (single serving packets), toothbrushes, body wash liquid (no pumps), undershirts (olive green, short sleeve), socks (boot cut, black), AA batteries, letters of support.
