EAGLE COUNTY — The Eagle County Household Hazardous Waste Facility will collect used cooking oil after Thanksgiving. The collection will start Nov. 30 and continue through Dec. 5. The facility will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
During the holidays, residents and restaurants often cook elaborate meals which use large amounts of cooking oil. When cooking oil or other liquid waste is placed in the trash, it can leak out of collection trucks and onto the road. Oil on roadways can enter storm drains, where it can harm fish and wildlife, and eventually make its way into drinking water. Oil poured down the sink causes problems at sewage plants and can create expensive blockages in sewer lines.
Cooking oil should be in leak-proof containers and secured with a tight lid. Individual containers of cooking oil must be no larger than five gallons. Up to 10 gallons of cooking oil per resident will be accepted for free, with a charge of 20 cents per gallon charged for additional amounts. Restaurants do not qualify for the free disposal but are encouraged to submit used cooking oil for 20 cents per gallon.
All oil collected will be sent to be converted into biodiesel fuel. For more information, call 970-328-3468.
