From avid viewer to the National League's top manager — it has been quite a year for Rockies manager Jim Tracy.
Following his firing in Pittsburgh, Tracy sat out last season, watching baseball from his home, gears grinding in his head. He returned last season as Clint Hurdle's bench coach, then took over as boss on May 29, executing one of the sport's most remarkable U-turns.
He inherited an 18-28 club. Under his watch, the Rockies went 74-42 and reached the playoffs, an accomplishment that should result in Tracy winning the NL Manager of the Year award Wednesday from the Baseball Writers Association.
"He gave us confidence because he had so much confidence in us," reliever Matt Daley said Tuesday.
Tracy and general manager Dan O'Dowd previously swept The Sporting News awards this offseason, claiming top manager and executive of the year honors.
When contract language is ironed out, both are expected to sign new three-year deals.
