EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado — With the recession, some Vail Valley residents haven't been able to afford to take their pets to the vet for exams and vaccines.
“Animals aren't getting checked out,” said Charlie Meynier, owner of Eagle-Vail Animal Hospital. “Things that could be taken care of in an early stage are not getting done because of the financial implications.”
That's why Meynier plans a free clinic Wednesday at the hospital.
“We're closing the door for our regular clients that day,” he said. “It's going to be our first pet outreach to give a helping hand for people who need it.”
Staff at the animal hospital will be giving exams and rabies vaccines from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Meynier said.
Char Quinn, director of the Eagle Valley Humane Society, said she sees a need in the community for the clinic.
“It gives people who haven't been able to afford to get their pet in for a check-up an opportunity to bring them in for a free exam,” she said.
To be considered for free services, people need to fill out a Humane Society form that asks for household income and other information. The animal hospital will schedule people who qualify for Wednesday's services. Forms are available at the Wags N' Whiskers in Edwards and Eagle, along with the Eagle-Vail Animal Hospital, 40843 U.S. Highway 6 in Eagle-Vail. Forms can also be faxed or e-mailed.
