Stone Creek Charter School gets lease extension in Avon

The school will stay just east of The Home Depot for another year

AVON — Stone Creek Charter School will stay put just past The Home Depo for until 2011.

Avon Town council extended its lease on the school property until June 30, 2011, Avon Mayor Ron Wolfe said. The extension will buy the Stone Creek Charter School time to search for a permanent home, Board Member Russell Molina said.

“We have time now to go and evaluate what options we have and continue to look for a permanent home,” he said.

The charter school's lease had been set to expire at the end of June. Town officials had been planning to use the 4-acre property on Yoder Avenue as a construction staging ground during an upcoming expansion of the public works facility on Swift Gulch road. However, federal grants the town needed to start the project did not come through, delaying the project, Town Mayor Pro Tem Brian Sipes said.

There are signs the town will not grant any more lease extensions to Stone Creek in the future.

In 2011, the town's parks department will need the property for a nursery and greenhouse in the summers, town manager Larry Brooks said. The town plans to save money by growing its own flower beds and small trees for town landscaping, he said.
