VAIL VALLEY, Colorado — This week, I wanted to give Vail Valley audiences a little refresher course on David Archuleta, the “American Idol” runner up who will bring his “Christmas From the Heart” tour to the Vilar Center Sunday night.
“Christmas music is something I've been involved with since I was a little kid,” Archuleta told the Vail Daily during an interview this week. “We used to sing in hospitals and retirement homes. It's always been a fun, special time for music with my family.”
David entered and won his first singing competition at the age of 10. He sang “I Will Always Love You” and “God Bless America” on Sept. 11, 2002 to New York City Firefighters' Station 54 at age 11. He won the junior singers division on Star Search — and a $100,000 prize — when he was 12. In 2007, at 16, he became one of the youngest contestants on “American Idol,” where he finished as the runner-up, receiving 44 percent of over 97 million votes.
David Cook, who ultimately won, thought Archuleta would win: “I have to concede it, the kid came out on all three songs and nailed it”, said Cook. Cook sold out the Vilar Center this past June.
Now at the age of 18, David is going out on his third national tour. We are fortunate to be one of only 19 stops on this tour.
Titled “Christmas from the Heart,” the tour is also the name of his latest CD release.
We've received a lot of calls at the box office from people wanting to know if this concert is going to be all Christmas music. The answer is no, the concert is about 50 percent holiday and 50 percent songs from his self-titled debut album and some new ones.
The tour kicked off in Salt Lake City on Nov. 24, and the set list from that evening included “Waiting for Yesterday,” “A Little Too Not Over You,” “Crush,” “The Riddle” by Five for Fighting (featuring David on Piano), and “Fields of Gold” by Eva Cassidy and Sting, to name a few.
And the evening will also feature a selection of holiday favorites from his latest album such as “Ave Maria,” “Silent Night” and “O Holy Night.”
David's fan base includes teenagers, grandparents and everyone in between. A certain amount of his stardom comes from his incredible success at such a young age. But for the real fans, it's his voice. There is a purity and freshness about his voice that was made for singing the kinds of pop songs that speak to generations of listeners.
His first pop single, “Crush,” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Archuleta placed second on Forbes' list of “Breakout Stars of 2008.” Archuleta also received the Teen Choice award for most fanatic fans. In August 2009, Archuleta won three Teen Choice awards for breakout artist, love song and the music tour category. In September he won rising male star at the ALMA Awards.
While David has already achieved so much so quickly, I think this is perhaps just the tip of the iceberg. I hope you will take this opportunity to see an amazing young artist in the beauty and intimacy of the Vilar Center.
