VAIL, Colorado — Three Vail ski instructors are participating in the K2 Pink Chase on Saturday at Keystone in memory of Mindy Mandel, a fellow Vail instructor who lost her battle to breast cancer in 2007, as well as other friends, family and those they don't know who have been touched by this disease.
The tight knit group of women, Carrie Larson, Pam Peterson and Betsey Kiehl, signed up after hearing about the event that benefits the Breast Cancer Research Fund.
“We know Mindy will be with us in spirit,” says Kiehl.
Larson and Peterson agreed, saying “Mindy was one of our closest friends and loved skiing and ski teaching. If she were still alive, she would have been the first to encourage us to sign up. Participating and raising funds to combat this horrible disease helps us to keep her memory alive and remind everyone we must find a cure so other women like Mindy do not lose their lives.”
The K2 Pink Chase Is an event for women of all ages and disciplines — ski, snowboard or telemark. Teams of three women will compete against each other by trying to ski the most vertical feet.
On event day, teams must determine the best approach with the access of several lifts, multiple trails and an assortment of bonus tents around the mountain to take into consideration. Teams are encouraged to dress up or accessorize in pink. Prizes will be awarded to the overall winning team that is strongest in vertical, money raised and spirit, the team that skis the most vertical and the team with the best pink accessory or outfit.
The “Snow Angels” as the Vail team is called are fundraising for the event through a variety of methods including e-mailing friends and family and seeking the support of community members and businesses. They are also organizing a party at the Main Street Grill in Edwards on Wednesday. The party will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.. Admission is free. There will be a raffle and silent auction with prizes including powder skis, poles, goggles wine and much more. For more information on the party or to make a donation, contact Carrie Larson at 970-524-2166
All proceeds from donations go to the Breast Cancer Research Fund. Ninety percent of donation dollars go to research grants and awareness programs.
