VAIL VALLEY, Colorado — The Yale Whiffenpoofs a cappella group, will perform twice this week at the Vilar Center in Colorado's Vail Valley. The group will open for B.B. King on Tuesday and perform with the von Trapp Children on Wednesda in Beaver Creek.
The Whiffenpoofs repertoire includes everything from jazz to contemporary pop to Yale standards. Audiences might hear anything from “Midnight Train to Georgia” to Broadway hits to an arrangement of Cyndi Lauper's “Time After Time.”
Michael Lavigne, business manager of the Whiffenpoofs (and also a second tenor in the troupe), said the group comes to Vail with the same mission that it follows in all of its national and international touring.
“We really consider ourselves cultural ambassadors for Yale,” he said. “It's very special to bring our music to people who haven't really been able to hear or see something like this before.”
At a recent performance in Idaho, a class of third grade students was in the audience.
“Afterwards, we received cards from kids, saying ‘I want to go to college too' and ‘I want to sing like you do,'” said Lavigne. “Touring with the Whiffenpoofs is an opportunity to connect with people on a level that we otherwise wouldn't have.”
The Whiffenpoofs performing with B.B. King is sold out. Call the box office at 888-920-ARTS (2787) to be added to the waiting list. Tickets for the Whiffenpoofs with the von Trapp Children are $35 to $45a and are available online at www.vilarpac.org, by calling 888-920-ARTS (2787) or in person at the box office in Beaver Creek.
