VAIL, Colorado — Danielle Brownell-Patty and Mitchell Underhill had the fastest times of the day in Saturday's Topolino time-trial selections at Vail.
On a snowy Saturday, Danielle Brownell-Patty of Aspen Valley Ski Club took her three runs down the giant-slalom course and came away with the fastest run for the women.
“She was very aggressive on the steeps,” said her coach, Pat Callahan. “She did not seem nervous and was ready to attack. For a young skier, a first-year J3, she showed she belongs in the upper echelon of these 13- and 14-year old racers.”
Only 17-hundredths of a second behind Brownell-Patty was Ski and Snowboard Club Vail's Kendall VanHee, and with three runs of slalom on tap for today, this will be a tight race for these two competitors.
“My first run was the fastest, but my second run felt better,” Vanhee said. “I'm happy with how close I am to first place right now and I'm looking forward to the slalom on Sunday.”
SSCV's Caroline Byrne placed third Saturday while Olivia Swift came in 12th.
For the men, Mitchell Underhill, from Minnesota's Buck Hill Ski Team, took his third run down the GS track and and turned it into the fastest run of the day.
“We had a strategy today,” said Tasha McCrank, Underhill's coach. “First run, you have to ski solid. Then, after making it to the finish, you can go. On his third run, I just told him, ‘Stay on your outside ski and go as fast as you can.'”
It appears this strategy worked as Underhill laid down a very fast run indeed under challenging conditions.
SSCV's Nick Santaniello had the third fastest time in Saturday's time trial, just 45-hundredths of a second behind Underhill.
“I felt like I skied pretty good, and that I put a couple of good runs together,” said Santaniello.
“Nick put it down the hill,” Santaniello's coach J.J. Jensen added. “He's trained hard, worked hard, and things are coming together for him at the right time.”
Alex Leever took eigth place for the men on this day.
The Topolino time trial selections continue on today with three runs of slalom for the J3 skiers at Vail. The fastest slalom time and the fastest GS time will be added together after Sunday's race to determine who will head to the Trofeo Topolino to compete against the best 13- and 14-year-old ski racers in the world.
Millennium Bank Colorado Junior Ski Cup
The Millennium Bank Colorado Junior Ski Cup made its stop in Keystone for giant slalom, and SSCV saw four of its women place in the top ten.
Mary Sackbauer placed fourth, Katherine Irwin took fifth, Taylor Rapley came in sixth and had the fastest time for the second run while Celine Guilmineau had an eigth-place finish with the third-fastest second run. Eva Spaeh also cracked into the top 20 with an 18th place.
“The girls are doing really well as a group and they push each other hard,” coach Dan Stripp said.
The men's side of the Millennium Bank tour saw SSCV's Cannon O'Brien finish sixth, Sean McCormick placed 10th, Nick Braun took 16th, Zachary Ziolkowski moved up 25 spots from his start position to 22nd place, Christoph Nederhauser was 37th, and Anthony Romano finished 36th after starting 64th.
“This was a really good finish for Cannon,” coach Mike Womack sai. “It's really good for the racers to keep moving up like this. By the end of the season they'll have lowered their age rankings dramatically.”
