I continue to be disappointed in the reasons cited by the Vail Daily and its readers in support of Eagle River Station. They are all about the money, and show no consideration for the lifestyle changes that Eagle River Station will create.
We purchased a second home in Eagle due to the life style that we can experience here. This lifestyle is grounded in an community that supports the environment and outdoor activities. It is about minimal traffic congestion but easy access to I-70 and Eagle Vail airport. It is about City Market, Costco, and the friendly Broadway shops and resturants to support our needs. It is about a modern student-focused school system and the new medical center.
When the Vail Daily cites the promised financial gains and infrasture improvements of ERS, it neglects to list the trades. While the gains may be promised, they are dependent on an economic recovery that will support the developer's and potential tenants' business plans into the future. A future that could be five to 10 years off. The only sure thing is that a “yes” vote on ERS will stop investment on Broadway, Capital, Eagle Ranch, City Market, and other central business districts immediately. It will reduce the tax value of the established Eagle commerical real estate.
With hundreds of plotted housing units unbuilt in Eagle Ranch, when will there be a need for the 581 homes promised for ERS? With Avon and Glenwood Springs a short ride away, do we really need need another more convient big box store for that monthy shopping trip?
Eagle needs to find employment opportunities that are not dependent on the skiing or construction industries. It needs to leverage its existing assets and create new assets that are attractive to the growth industries of high tech, health care, and clean energy. The addition of ERS will not attract them. Water, sunshine, the Eagle County Regional Airport, good schools, clean environment, educated work force, world-class communications, and safe transportation can attact these companies.
It is disappointing that Eagle's leaders opt for short-term promises that are in conflict with the real long-term gains.
