Here is why we have a “No ERS” sign on our lawn. ERS as currently proposed is too big. Period.
We could really stop there, couldn't we? However, we'd really like to hear an intelligent argument about how this ginormous project is the right size for Eagle. So far we have not. We doubt any pro-ERS people out there truly like how this project looks and feels as it is currently proposed. Do you? Really? Eighty-eight acres of asphalt?
Don't think for a second that many of us who are opposed to ERS don't want more shopping opportunities or a Target or an organic grocer or more tax revenue for our town.
Most of us are not entirely anti big box. Most of us love our Costco! But we want a say in the size and scope of this project. We feel as though we have been ignored by our town planners when we repeatedly ask them to bring us a more acceptable plan. Almost 600,000 square feet of retail is unacceptable to most of us who live here. Regardless of how much financial windfall it may bring. And that is a very big may!
The town planners should have stuck to their guns and said to Trinity/RED: “Bring us what we want or we will shoot this thing down.” The few modifications RED did make were insultingly insignificant.
You can say “no” to a developer. Most of them are smart enough to know how to play the game. Like our toddler, they are persistent and need to be told “no” alot before they get it.
And we don't believe they would take their ball and go play in the next town. They have 19 million reasons to stay here and play by our rules (the amount they paid for the land). BTW, my father was a developer.
Thankfully we will have a vote on ERS and hopefully we can say: “No thanks. Come up with a more reasonable plan and we'll jump on the bandwagon.”
If we are wrong, we have no qualms, as the democratic process will have been served. But we doubt this is what the people of Eagle really want.
