VAIL, Colorado — Vail's Cogswell Gallery will show the Frizion Photographs of Peter Wasilewski. The exhibit is in conjunction with Triumph Development and Vail Art In Public Places' third annual Triumph Winterfest's “Are You Listening” display, an Illuminated ice sculpture by artists Lawrence Argent and Scott Rella
Wasilewski, a scientist and artist, created Frizion (pronounced ‘frizz-yon'), or ‘frozen vision,' while studying the structure of ice. He took pictures of ice crystals using a set of polarizing filters.
Wasilewski controls the ice patterns that emerge during the freezing of water, and then captures the illuminated patterns in digital images. H
The color of ice is a critical feature of the captured images. The color of ice depends on how the light is split and slowed as it passes through the ice.
The Frizions can only be created as the ice is freezing. If the ice is fully frozen only bulky crystals can be seen.
Peter learned to enable the broad color palette to be realized and to some extent controlled. As this happens, the engagement with the ice medium assures that creativity is satisfied. The result is the FRIZION.
The exhibit opens Friday to coincide with the lighting of the “Are You Listening” ice sculptures.
