EAGLE COUNTY — Eagle County School Officials last month looked at a variety of options for what to do with the old Battle Mountain High School in Eagle-Vail, as well as all schools on the east side of the district in Colorado's Vail Valley. Board members, district staff and people in the community contributed to a list of “pros” and “cons” for each option last month. The board reached no decisions. The discussion continues Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the district office, 757 E. Third St. in Eagle.

• Some renovations to Red Sandstone Elementary School ($5 to 6 million), Americans with Disabilities Act issues
• Somewhat critical time frame (4 to 5 years) for renovations, requiring a bond initiative
• Meadow Mountain Elementary School has limited capacity
• Transportation (where students live to where they attend school)
• Under‐capacity issues and lack of programming
• Old Battle Mountain High School setting empty (maintenance costs)
• Risk of land loss with state land board (18 to 20 months)
• Physical locations of some schools is a concern (Minturn Middle School )
• Meadow Mountain Elementary School currently utilizing cafeteria at Avon Elementary School
• Small school staffing eliminates programmatic options
• Meadow Mountain Elementary School and Red Sandstone Elementary School playgrounds
CHALLENGES — community member comments

believe it is logical
• Combining ELOB schools – Meadow Mountain Elementary School – Minturn Middle School

• Staffing configurations that come with a pre‐K through eighth-grade school (new model for Eagle County School District)
• Red Sandstone Elementary School integrating into a pre‐K through eighth-grade school?
• Cost of renovating the old Battle Mountain High School/Dowd Junction Site
CHALLENGES — community member comments
• Was stated that Red Sandstone Elementary School would have an issue going into kindergarten through eighth-grade building or ELOB – should not be issue. This currently goes on down valley
• Is the district going to continue support (money) “different
options” for schools
• Just having Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy in Minturn Middle School leaves it under capacity
• Waste $200,000 per year facilities money to keep Minturn Middle School open
CHALLENGES — staff comments
• building repairs
• Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy at Minturn Middle School not financially responsible
• Additional cost – not savings (retrofit cost) plus cost of
maintaining same number of sites
• No current kindergarten through eighth-grade configurations
• Displaces teachers and administrators
• Leave Minturn Middle School extremely under populated
Option: Combine Meadow Mountain Elementary, Red Sandstone Elementary and Minturn Middle School into a Pre-K-8 school at the Dowd Junction Site (old Battle Mountain high in Eagle-Vail). Move Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy to Red Sandstone Elementary site.
POSITIVES — board member comments• Asset of 104 acres (at Minturn Middle School)

$300,000/yr)
CHALLENGES – board member comments
• empty 104 acres at Minturn Middle School
• An empty Meadow Mountain Elementary School
• Red Sandstone Elementary School would be under‐capacity with only Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy kids
• Vail and Minturn losing their community schools
• New boundaries would have to be developed
• Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy becomes the one programmatic option in Vail, which isn't a viable option for
everyone
• Combining the three schools puts the enrollment at 642 (the bigger the school is, the more money you have to put into the remodel and upgrade of the facility)
• Variance kids may not fit into re‐configuration
• Red Sandstone Elementary School does not have the expeditionary learning focus that Meadow Mountain Elementary School and Minturn Middle School do
• Cost of renovating the old Battle Mountain High School/Dowd Junction Site
CHALLENGES — community member comments
• Money reconfigure Red Sandstone Elementary School for Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy

• How do program options increase – we still follow staffing guidelines
• Reach capacity quickly
• Ask Town of Vail to deed the land under Red Sandstone Elementary School to Eagle County School District
• Work with Town of Minturn for re‐defining the programming the use of Minturn Middle School
• We could redevelop Minturn Middle School site but we can't redevelop Red Sandstone Elementary School site since we don't own the land
CHALLENGES — staff comments
• Combination of expeditionary learning and traditional is difficult
• Huge school (for this valley) over 600 students
• Construction requirements for Dowd Junction site
• How many principals lose their position
• Cost of retrofit – Would Red Sanstone Elementary School be required to do ELOB?
• Retrofit Red Sanstone Elementary School
• Will capacity be reached for Dowd site?
• How many administrators
• What do you do with preschool from Red Sanstone Elementary School?
• No “regular” school in Vail – parents mad
• Would lose all transfers and variances at Red Sandstone Elementary School from Lake County and variances within district (parents who work in Vail)
• School size – doesn't fall into “small school philosophy”
Option: Combine Meadow Mountain Elementary and Minturn Middle School into a PreK‐8 at the Dowd Junction Site (old Battle Mountain). Leave Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy at the Minturn Middle site and Move New America School to Minturn Middle School.

• Potentially not the best option for the New America School population
(ie. further location, balancing work with school)
• Minturn Middle School sentiments of ‘we can't stay in the building, but
two other schools can'
CHALLENGES — community member comments

POSITIVES — board comments• Financially, you've consolidated buildings effectively
• Program offerings would improve with schools at full

public schools
