VAIL, Colorado — Karl Krueger, a well-known architect and native of Vail, Colorado, is lending his latest creation to the town of Vail's Art in Public Places program.
His snow polar bear sculpture was installed this week in Vail Village at the intersection of Gore Creek Drive and Wall Street, across from the Children's Fountain.
The bear is a winter sculpture experiment, Krueger says.
The design is intended to make the snow last longer, look lighter and be mobile. Krueger used a wood frame and wire mesh lath covered by 3 to 4 inches of slushy snow to keep the sculpture from collapsing under its own weight after exposure to sun and or warm temperatures. The polar bear is mounted on circa-1985 skis.
The temporary installation will remain in place as long as the weather will allow. Stop by and have your photo taken next to the snow polar bear before it's too late.
