At a packed event last week, e-town and Habitat for Humanity's local Vail Valley affiliate raised over $15,000 in support of Habitat International's efforts in Haiti.
Habitat for Humanity has 26 years experience serving disadvantaged families in Haiti and has provided more than 2,000 Haitian families with housing solutions. Habitat is known throughout the country for its capacity in construction skills, as well as disaster mitigation and financial literacy.
Immediately following the earthquake, Habitat for Humanity responded to families in need with an emergency humanitarian response of shelter kits, cleanup and rehabilitation. A cleanup “cash for work” program is currently organizing Haitian communities and providing individuals with tools (shovels, wheelbarrows, bars, etc.) to clean up debris and salvage materials that can be recycled in a shelter solution. Not only does this provide an influx of cash to those affected by the disaster to help them meet basic needs such as food and contributes to their mental health but also provides a positive, proactive opportunity to help with recovery. In addition, Habitat for Humanity is providing “shelter kits” with basic materials to provide protection and temporary refuge during the rebuilding process.
Generous supporters included e-town, Vail Valley Foundation, Resort Ventures West, Lazy J Ranch, Claire Thayer, Claggett/Rey Gallery, Riverwalk Wine & Spirits, Allegria Spa, The Bookworm of Edwards, Hollie Johnson, Mountain Mushers, Cascade, Westin Riverfront, Precourt Foundation, National Distributing, Martha Brassel, Merle Norman, ORVIS, Golden Bear, Aprons & Strings, Stacey Vacheron, Evol, Vintage Magnolia, Ptamigan Sports, Nicole Timmerman, PSAV and others.
Organized by board member Amanda Precourt, Martha Brassel and Monique Busold, the event provided locals with the opportunity to “Contribute Cash, Construct Shelter and Create Opportunities” for Haiti.
