DENVER — Plans for a memorial to Coloradans killed in the war on terror have been put on hold amid a dispute over how to memorialize the Iraq war.
House Majority Leader Paul Weissmann, a Democrat from Louisville, says the law creating a memorial committee specifically called for a memorial to the war on terror.
He says that because President Barack Obama has said invading Iraq was a mistake, lawmakers need time to figure out what that means for the memorial. He says new legislation may be required.
Republican state Sen. Mike Kopp of Littleton says the project should not be derailed by politics. He says the memorial is dedicated to fallen heroes, not specific wars, and it should go forward.
