VAIL, Colorado --The Vail Symposium's seventh Unlimited Adventure Series welcomed some of the top adventurers from around the world who shared their awe-inspiring travels. Quirky Greg Stump talked about his 25 years making ski films; Roz Savage offered her life-changing story about moving from a cubicle to the open ocean; and curious Kirsten Gum shared unique treasures she has discovered over her years of travel. The series will conclude Thursday night with speaker Les Guthman.
Guthman is a world-renowned adventure filmmaker. He's produced three of the top adventure DVDs, including "Into the Thunder Dragon" and "Into the Tsangpo Gorge," which documented the first descent of the Tsangpo Gorge in Tibet, also known as the "Everest of rivers." The third film "Farther Than the Eye Can See," which followed blind climber Erik Weihenmayer and his guide Jeff Evans on their historic ascent of Everest. Evans was also recently in Vail as part of the Vail Symposium's Unlimited Adventure Series.
A sampling of the great feats that Guthman has caught on film will be sampled during his presentation. His most recent film, "Skiing Everest" (2009), features the handful of skiers worldwide who climb Mt. Everest and other Himalayan peaks alpine style, without using supplemental oxygen or hiring porters and guides, and then click into their skis on the world's most dangerous slopes. Filmed around the world, it includes skiers Mike Marolt, who was also director of photography, Steve Marolt, Hans Kammerlander, Chris Davenport, Laura Bokas, Mark Newcomb and Fredrik Ericsson.
Guthman was the founding executive vice president and executive producer of Outside Television, the production division of Outside magazine. During his tenure, he produced 33 prime time expedition, adventure and environmental documentaries. He has also worked for the Walt Disney Company as producer of the Discovery Magazine series. The series was quite successful and eventually moved over to the Discovery Channel. Guthman is the current founder and CEO of XPLR films.
Don't miss the last program in this Vail Symposium series. Following the program will be an after party with Guthman at the Tap Room. Two beers, appetizers and an entry into a drawing are all included with a $5 donation. The giveaway this week will include an adventure from 4 Eagle Ranch.
